Cyclone - A New Platform

Toggle Mute

When I first got my Psion 3a, I want just buying a productivity device. I was buying a place in a community. It was 1996, and I was 16 years old. I had a huge interest in programming but not really managed to get started in anything, but a book on OPL and the ability to instantly run programs on a mobile device literally changed my life. I found other programmers on the fledgling internet to talk with, and beta test for. I made programs to make my life easier. One of those programs was good enough to get me onto a University Degree for Cybernetics when I had no school qualification in computing.

For me, that sense of community is what is missing in our current platforms. Starting out in programming should be easier than ever - the Internet has all the resources imaginable. Yet the barriers to entry are still high. You want to program on an iOS device? You need a Mac and a credit card. Android? Boot up your PC. Why can't we develop and launch on these mobile devices like we could over 25 years ago?

This project is my interpretation of a modern reworking of the Psion dream. It isn't as good - in my opinion nothing will beat the 5mx in what productivity it offered in such a mobile package - but it is my best way at trying to combine modern mobile devices with the productivity of the PDA.

Welcome to Cyclone.

Designed with the Psion 5 platform firmly in mind, this is a new platform built on web technologies. It runs as a web application on any modern device - Phone, Tablet, PC, Chromebook, even VR headset. A platform you can be productive on, no matter which OS it is running on top of. It isn't an operating system as such - more an operating environment.

Below is embedded a fully working demo of Cyclone, showing it even works well within the 640 x 240 pixel boundaries of the original Psion 5 screen!

So What?

Well, this is where I need some help. Not so much in developing the project - I have very specific ideas about that and know very much where I want this to go, but I do want to know your opinions. Would this be a platform you would be interested in? Is it something you would find useful in your own modern workflow and lifestyles?
